Avatar and art
Eight editorial observation exercises from the supplied field school. These are prompts to investigate, not reports of hands-on testing.
Design a strong silhouette
Avatar work must read in a tiny catalog tile, in motion and against busy worlds.
Shrink the item to 64 pixels and check what survives.
Test layered fit
Cages, deformation and extreme poses reveal problems a neutral preview hides.
Try three bodies, a crouch and one layered outfit.
Build a color hierarchy
Use one dominant value, one support range and a controlled accent so detail stays readable.
Convert the thumbnail to grayscale and check the focal point.
Animate weight
Timing, anticipation, follow-through and contact sell motion more than extra keyframes.
Mute effects and judge whether the body alone communicates impact.
Frame the thumbnail
One clear subject, a legible action and honest scale beat a crowded collage.
Ask what a player can understand in one second.
Name for discovery
Accurate nouns and categories help people find an item without deceptive similarity or keyword stuffing.
Rewrite one title so form, theme and category are explicit.
Respect the rig
Attachment points, proportions and locomotion constraints should shape the model from the first sketch.
Test the rough mesh on the target rig before texturing.
Design a set, not clutter
Related pieces need a shared visual rule while each item still works alone.
Identify the repeated shape, material or motif across the set.
